He was raised in, and later ordained by, the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1941. He graduated from Mission House College with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Theology degrees. He then studied at The University of Chicago Divinity School and received a Master of Theology in practical theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.
