by DC Acain (Author)
In ancient Hawai'i, there were no written languages. To ensure the preservation of genealogies, history, and legends, certain children were chosen and trained throughout their childhood in the arts of Hula, Oli (chants), and Ha'i Mo'olelo (storytelling). These skills were essential in passing down knowledge accurately from generation to generation.
Dominic "DC" Acain grew up during a time when many of Hawai'i's ancient traditions were fading due to Western influence. Both of his parents were among the last generation raised in the remote Makaweli Valley on Kaua'i, where the old ways still thrived. This upbringing allowed him the unique opportunity to sit with elders, listening and learning the stories and experiences passed down through generations.
In today's fast-paced world, it's rare to find children willing to sit and absorb these traditions. To combat this, DC has taken a modern approach to preserving the art of Ha'i Mo'olelo by sharing his stories in his book, The Hawaiian Storyteller: Stories of the Paranormal in Paradise. Through this work, he continues the legacy of storytelling, ensuring that these cherished tales endure in the hearts of future generations.
