This book introduces the Duffy-Rath System for the assessment, treatment and prevention of cumulative and degenerative musculoskeletal disorders and disability. The system is a prevention-based approach that provides patients and clients with strategies to gain control of signs and symptoms and develop a personalized strategy to remain active and able through their working years and into retirement. The system has been helping many thousands of patients and clients become self-reliant since 1984. This book provides the basic concepts, background and evidence-basis for the system and is a pre-requisite to learning regional application of the approach. Introduced are the concepts of the three stages of MSDs, the prevention continuum, musculoskeletal self-efficacy and six strategies to successfully manage the complete range of cumulative and degenerative disorders. The mission for the system is; "the prevention of musculoskeletal and lifestyle-related disorders and disability through education, training and research."
Author Biography
Wayne graduated from the Physical Therapy Program at Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn in 1975. He has played a significant role in the evolution of orthopaedic manual therapy, recognized as one of the most influential clinicians in this field of practice. He was a founding member of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Section, the McKenzie Institute and is recognized for his contributions to the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. He has been an adjunct instructor of Orthopaedics and manual therapy for the PT program at UMDNJ, and Clinical Assistant Professor for the PT program at Thomas Jefferson University. He is an author of numerous research papers and other publications. He has provided continuing education workshops throughout North America, Europe, New Zealand and South America. His career focus has been optimizing strategies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders; including pioneering systems that standardizes interventions and objectively measures outcome with all patients and clients. Jean graduated from the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Pittsburg in 1979. She played an important role as a board member, instructor and journal editor in the developmental years of the McKenzie Institute. She has been the driving force in the development of the Duffy-Rath System(c) (DRS) for injury prevention in the work environment. Through her efforts the DRS prevention programs have spread across the country based upon word of mouth marketing. Programs has been developed a customized to small and large companies, office based to light and heavy manufacturing, the construction industries and others. She has numerous publications related to MSD prevention and the programs have won awards and gained special recognition form OSHA as a center of excellence. Together, Wayne and Jean have dedicated their career to helping companies, healthcare providers and individuals find solutions to musculoskeletal problems that have a positive, long-term impact. Their mission statement says it all; "Our mission is the prevention of musculoskeletal and lifestyle-related disorders and disability through education, training and research."
