From the Introduction: Of all the poems you have written, which ones are your favorites? Her question became my assignment - out of a file of hundreds of poems, which are my favorites?

I selected the ones in this book. They aren't my "best poems", or poems others might choose. They span over three decades of time, many are no longer the language I use, nor are relevant to this time period. But they are the poems that speak to me in ways many other poems don't. They are poems that remind me of a life rich in experience, and poems that got me through the many joys and woes of a long life.
