When I started writing Swagger Wars, I kept asking myself one question: what does it really mean to have swag?

For a lot of young people, "swag" has been boiled down to labels-sneakers, phones, jewelry, and clothes. Social media shouts it louder, making it seem like what you wear decides your worth. But deep down, I think most of us know that's not the truth. The truth is harder, but better: swag is confidence. Swag is courage. Swag is showing up as yourself when it would be easier to hide.

Jalen's story is fiction, but it's built out of real hallways I've walked, real whispers I've heard, and real moments when kids were measured not by who they were, but by what they owned. Writing this book reminded me that the voices most people try to ignore-the quiet ones, the overlooked ones, the ones without the spotlight-are often the strongest.
