The\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eparticipants lived in the northern sector of the Navajo Nation. Three research questions\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eguided the study: \"What strengths do Navajo grandparents bring into the relationship with\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etheir grandchildren?\" \"What challenges do Navajo grandparents face as they are raising their\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egrandchildren?\" \"What do the Navajo grandparents need to help them meet or overcome the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echallenges?\" Strengths included teaching their grandchildren, setting a good example, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enurturing them with proper teaching, and working with them to help them become\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eindependent. Challenges included lack of financial resources in addition to the dysfunction\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand alcoholism in their own children who were the biological parents. The grandparents also\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexperienced challenges related to their grandchildren such as keeping them safe and not\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehaving child care. Challenges related to themselves included having health issues, having to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estart over again being parents, and feeling overwhelmed. The grandparents indicated that\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethey needed financial assistance to help with their grandchildren. They also wanted more\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einformation about how to help their grandchildren with education and how to help them\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elearn their Navajo culture. The grandparents wanted to meet with other grandparents to talk\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewith them about how to raise their grandchildren. They wanted time to take care of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethemselves. The Navajo grandparents wanted to enjoy their later years; however, because\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethey were raising their grandchildren, they were experiencing emotional, physical, and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efinancial difficulties. They cared deeply for their grandchildren, yet they were willing to make the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enecessary sacrifices and show ajoobaa' (care) to them. Despite the difficulties they had, they\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efound joy and fulfillment in their role as grandparents. Recommendations for practice include\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproviding financial resources as well as providing information about raising grandchildren.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRecommendations also include providing networking opportunities with other grandparents\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewho were raising their grandchildren.
