This book is designed to teach a novice how to preside effectively. The book covers methods on overcoming barriers to presiding - including fear of public speaking, lack of knowledge about the rules, and not knowing what to say in a given situation - and explains how to gather the skills and assistance you will need to preside effectively. Chapters cover preparing for the meeting, working with your team, and diplomacy from the chair, among others.
Author Biography
M. Eugene Bierbaum received his Ph.D. in communication theory from the University of Missouri in 1965 and served as the tenth president of AIP during 1976-1978. During 1979-1983 he served as curriculum director for the first AIP Practicums offered at the College of William and Mary. He served as accrediting director during 1981-1984 and education director during 1997-2000. Fol-lowing twenty-five years of teaching communication studies at the State Uni-versity of New York, he retired in 1992 with the title of professor emeritus. Dur-ing 1991-2001 he chaired a committee to write the Joint Code of Ethics that was subsequently adopted by the American Institute of Parliamentarians and the National Association of Parliamentarians. He continues to teach workshops on parliamentary procedure throughout the United States.
