It is the story of several generations of descendants of African slaves, brought by English merchants to the island of Barbados, in the West Indies, on the new continent. The narrative shows the hardships it was to live on the plantation. Once free, Benjamin, a son, had dreams of one day leaving the island to see other parts of the world. He got an opportunity to work in the isthmus of Panama, to help build the interoceanic canal. This story narrates his journey and what happened when he got there.
