Gibbons first became interested in family genealogy in 1966. After retiring in 1995 she became much more involved, publishing her first book in 2002. She has published in The Argyll Colony Plus, The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal and is presently editor of Cumberland Chronicles, the Cumberland County (NC) Genealogical Society quarterly newsletter.
