When people hear the word "Gossip", some will head for the nearest exit. Some will eagerly lick their lips as they wait for hopefully scintillating or scandalous news about someone else. And then there are those who want to use the information they obtain to share with others because it gives them a sense of power and being in the know.
Gossip is shared information that is almost always thought of as a negative practice. Some might say gossip should never be thought of as anything good or useful. They'd say sharing words or enlightening another about the actions and goings on of someone else's life serves no good purpose and should not be repeated even if it's rumored to be true. But we are living in an information society full of people who want or need to be informed. As long as there is "news" to be shared there will always be gossipers and gossipees. That being said, the source of the information given must always be considered. I've often wondered, can anything good be said of gossip when just the thought of the word can conjure up an image of two people in an empty breakroom with their heads together spilling tea about another coworker? Let's face it. We've all been talked about or gossiped about at some time in our lives. It hurts when someone passes on a story that was meant for their ears only, and even more when they misinterpret or misconstrue what was shared with them in confidence.
Any gossip we are privy to should be run through the THINK test before we consider the thought of sharing or ingesting the "juicy morsel" about to be served. This applies whether you are the gossiper or the gossipee.
THINK:
T - Is it true?
H - Is it helpful?
I - Is it inspiring?
N - Is it necessary?
K - Is it kind?
From cover to cover, my aim is to transform the negative thoughts and practices that surround the sharing of common gossip into the sharing of good gossip. To partake in offering information or news about things that are excellent and praiseworthy; admirable and noble; right and pure. These kinds of thoughts and practices can surely pass the THINK test. They are the perfect antidote for quenching fiery darts.
