She grew up in Washington, D.C., but moved to Minnesota in 1961, after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School. She graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN with a B.A. in Biology and Psychology in 1965. Among several dozen works for the stage, her full-length ballet, \"The Golden Bough, a Fairytale Ballet for Children\", based on her original book (1997), is the most well-known. The book was recently (2015) published in Spanish and French. A Russian translation is currently in the works. Besides writing and teaching, her passions are nature, working in the outdoors, and animals - especially cats. She prefers reading history, anthropology, humor and anything written by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S.
