Jed had completed a three-year apprenticeship in all phases of building and working with wood, including buildings, wagon repair, and wood carving. He truly loved his work and was well-prepared to start building a new home, farm buildings, and fences. A neighboring girl of a similar age wanted to learn to work with her hands and about building. She offered to help, and in doing so, loved the work and fell in love with Jed.
