After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1895, Cather returned to Red Cloud briefly before moving east to work on \u003ci\u003eHome Monthly\u003c\/i\u003e and eventually \u003ci\u003eMcClure's\u003c\/i\u003e. Her first published books were the poetry collection \u003ci\u003eApril Twilights\u003c\/i\u003e and the short story collection \u003ci\u003eThe Troll Garden\u003c\/i\u003e. In 1923 Cather received the Pulitzer Prize for her novel \u003ci\u003eOne of Ours\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cb\u003eBernice Slote \u003c\/b\u003e(1913-83), a distinguished Cather scholar, was a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
