The community hosted dozens of synagogues, a Talmud Torah, a Jewish hospital, and several schools. Jews dominated local trades, particularly as mechanics, craftsmen in machine shops, and in the flax, timber, and grain industries. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVitebsk, the birthplace of Marc Chagall, appears in many of his paintings, often with the depiction of a fiddler on the roof of a house, but Vitebsk was hardly the shtetl of \u003cem\u003eFiddler on the Roof\u003c\/em\u003e. It was, instead, a large city with a large and vibrant Jewish population. As \u003cem\u003eVitebsk Amol\u003c\/em\u003e, the Vitebsk yizkor book, illustrates, it was a city with a diverse population-diverse religiously, economically, artistically, and politically.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs the essays in \u003cem\u003eVitebsk Amol\u003c\/em\u003e demonstrate, that diverse population participated in the major events of their time.
