The Unboring Story
Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 was not a pleasant place to be.
The city smelled. Horses, open sewers, and several thousand people packed into a relatively small area created an aroma that visitors described with great creativity and obvious suffering. The summer heat was brutal. And into this fragrant, sweltering city came 55 delegates from 12 states, tasked with fixing a country that was quietly falling apart.
Rhode Island didn't send anyone. They didn't trust the whole thing from the start.
The delegates gathered at Independence Hall, the same building where the Declaration of Independence had been signed eleven years earlier. They closed all the windows to keep their debates private. In Philadelphia. In July. With 55 men in wool suits. The temperature regularly climbed above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was, by most accounts, spectacularly uncomfortable.
