In 1940, he left France for the United States, where he wrote some of his greatest works--\u003ci\u003eBend Sinister\u003c\/i\u003e (1947), \u003ci\u003e Lolita\u003c\/i\u003e (1955), \u003ci\u003ePnin \u003c\/i\u003e(1957), and \u003ci\u003ePale Fire\u003c\/i\u003e (1962)--and translated his earlier Russian novels into English. He taught at Wellesley, Harvard, and Cornell.
