At the center of this world stands Cornelius James, owner of the Birmingham Hammers. His lineage didn't arrive seeking opportunity; they were brought shackled, against their will. Cornelius's inheritance begins in West Africa with Adeola, runs through a Reconstruction-era courthouse in Alabama, and extends on forty-seven acres of Shelby County land purchased by his father, Solomon. Now, Cornelius watches his football team from a folding chair on four steps of pine board above Mitchell Field's red clay. Every generation added something. None surrendered anything.

As rival dynasties collide, Cornelius finds himself fighting a battle far bigger than football-a battle for ownership, community, and the right to keep what generations fought to build.
