My son Lucas is non-verbal autistic, and when he got his diagnosis we were told he would never show affection or talk, and that we should avoid too much " interaction" with him. Well, my answer was NO WAY! Nothing would stop me from expressing my love to my son.

Every night I would come up with an animal story ( he loves animals! ) as a way to encourage his communication skills. One day out of nowhere, Lucas looked at me and said, in a full and clear sentence: Mommy, baby alligator story, please. That was the happiest day ever. Lucas is now 17 years old, and he still asks me to tell him the baby alligator story, but now he also read the story out loud!
