By engaging some of the most foundational Western political texts (from Plato's \u003ci\u003eRepublic\u003c\/i\u003e to Locke's \u003ci\u003eTwo Treatises\u003c\/i\u003e to Rousseau's \u003ci\u003eDiscourse on Inequality\u003c\/i\u003e), this work shows how the human and animal are intertwined in the creation of government, and in particular, in social contract theory. These political transitions are connected to transformations in the view of human nature that lead to the suppression of the animality of human life, as seen in Descartes' account of the metaphysics of man. \u003ci\u003eStates of Nature\u003c\/i\u003e concludes by arguing for a new, vital, and relational approach toward animality as a foundation for our animal and environmental obligations.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eAuthor Biography\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eChristopher La Barbera is Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Humanities at Colby-Sawyer College.
