It is \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eone of 26 sites within the Long Term Ecological Research \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNetwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt has a continental climate characterized by warm, wet \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esummers and dry, cold winters. Average annual precipitation \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e(32.9 in, 835 mm) is sufficient to support woodland or \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esavanna vegetation; consequently, drought, fire and grazing \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eare important in maintaining this grassland. The site is \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etopographically complex with an elevation range from 1050 \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto 1457 ft (320 to 444 m). In addition to the dominant \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etallgrass prairie, Konza contains forest, claypan, shrub and \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eriparian communities. Limestone outcrops are found \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethroughout the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKonza Prairie is located within the largest remaining area \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof unplowed tallgrass prairie in North America, the Flint \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHills. Konza supports a diverse mix of species including \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e576 vascular plants, 31 mammals, 208 bird species, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e34 types of reptiles and amphibians, 20 kinds of fish, and \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eover 700 types of invertebrates.
