This choice\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand the lifestyle it engenders set Corinna and Syd on deeply discordant life tracks and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etoward life goals that prove incompatible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the meantime, Viktor, Corinna's father and now professor emeritus, has\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebeen summoned to California for a hospital visit with his cousin and boyhood hero, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMitchell Kipnis. Despite Mitchell's palatial Malibu home, Viktor perceives Mitchell's\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eloneliness as a widower and retiree and convinces him that a prolonged vacation in\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehis old hometown--Thompsonville--is just what the doctor would have ordered.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAdditionally, Viktor reminds Mitchell that his son Paul, has just taken a position at\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEly College in Thompsonville and would be an added companion. Mitchell consents\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto this transition and eventually becomes a thoroughly vibrant part of the whole\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThompsonville scene. Inevitably, Corinna and Syd separate; and through this painful\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eprocess, Corinna actually begins to fall in love with another person--having herself\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eattained a depth and confidence she had never before realized. In this generational\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand a career mix of interesting, well-realized characters, there are more than enough\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eopportunities for dynamic clashes of values and priorities--small-town community or\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebig-city glitz? Wealth and power or a dedication to personal development? Parents\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand their children retaining familial ties between generations or opting to go it alone?\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePlenty of opportunity for second thoughts. And hopefully discovering second chances\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ealong the way, the reader might be drawn into some thoughtful reevaluation of his own\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebasic assumptions.
