Though the war seems far away from her remote island, she spends her time wandering the beach looking for pirates and Germans. Her brother is fighting in Europe and Heddy has recently lost her grandmother, Nonni. She discovers a man living in an abandoned house just down the beach from her home and knows this man is hiding, but why? Nonni still visits Heddy and listens to her fears. When Heddy's mother arranges a playdate with a boy her age, Heddy meets her best friend. The war and it's ugliness washes up after a hurrican and Heddy must make a choice. Should she tell her family about the man or keep his secret?
