Both Quincy and the \u003cbr\u003ecounty in which it lies, Adams, were named for President \u003cbr\u003eJohn Quincy Adams. \u003cbr\u003eIn 1822, a man named John Wood built a cabin at the \u003cbr\u003efoot of what would later become Delaware Street, near the \u003cbr\u003eMississippi River. As more people came, the village grew \u003cbr\u003eeastward from that spot. Many German and Irish immigrants \u003cbr\u003ecame to Quincy, along with pioneers moving from Kentucky \u003cbr\u003eand Virginia.
