While at Harvard, he was frequently published in the \u003cem\u003eHarvard Advocate\u003c\/em\u003e. Over the years, Berman published poems in literary journals such as the \u003cem\u003eFormalist, Piedmont Literary Review, Sparrow, Orbis, Iambs and Trochees\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cem\u003ePivot\u003c\/em\u003e. He also published three chapbooks: \u003cem\u003eFuture Imperfect\u003c\/em\u003e (State Street Press, 1982), \u003cem\u003eSlippage\u003c\/em\u003e (Robert L. Barth, 1996), and \u003cem\u003eDavid Berman: Greatest Hits 1965-2002\u003c\/em\u003e (Pudding House, 2002). A student of Robert Lowell and Archibald MacLeish, Berman was a longtime member of the Powow River Poets of Newburyport, Massachusetts. In addition, he was a member of the Harvard Club, a trustee of the Cantata Singers, and Vice Échanson and Vice Conseiller Gastronomique Honoraire of the Boston chapter of La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.
