Many of those who shared their memories have since passed on, and through this work, their stories are preserved.

This is not a history compiled from other histories, except where noted. Rather, it reflects the lived experiences and recollections of the author Ruth Gilpin's family-the Pownalls and the Gilpins-along with stories and facts shared by ranchers and longtime residents of the area. It traces the region's development from small homesteads in the late 1800s, to large ranches in the early 1900s, and into the modern era, when those ranches have gradually been divided into smaller parcels to accommodate Arizona's growing population.

The author's husband, L. B. (Gil) Gilpin, was an important source of support, helping recall people and events that might otherwise have been forgotten. A native Arizonan, he lived in the area from 1932 until his passing in 1990. The author's daughter Mary assisted in gathering information by interviewing ranchers and recording their stories. Her daughters Pat and Barbara contributed by formatting the manuscript and helping her learn to use a computer. Her grandson, Tom Mascarelli, created the cover artwork. This work stands as a true family effort.

The author was deeply grateful to the many individuals who generously shared their family histories and photographs. Without their help, this history would not be as complete. Some information regarding early post offices was drawn from Arizona Place Names by Will C. Barnes.

As this history is based on personal memory and firsthand accounts, any errors are unintentional. It is presented with the hope that readers will appreciate and enjoy this preserved record of the past.

Number of Pages: 302

Dimensions: 0.63 x 11 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: April 05, 2026
