by J. Payne Collier (Author)
Edward Alleyn (1566 - 1626) was an English Elizabethan actor who founded Dulwich College and Alleyn's School. Ned, as he was called, was a leading actor in his time. By 1590 his career had reached its peak. He was performing the roles of Faustus and Tamburlaine, which were probably created for him. He retired from acting in 1604. In 1605 he bought the manor of Dulwich from Sir Francis Calto. After 20 years of marriage Alleyn was still childless. He decided to create the College of God's Gift at Dulwich. The college is still flourishing today.
