Bates County MIssouri was completely looted & burned including all churches, gov't buildings and the courthouse. The early history of Bates County is difficult to piece together due to this fact as well as other people not wishing to glorify any misconduct by Union Army troops from Kansas. By Sept 1863, not a single structure was left standing in Bates County Missouri with most former residents scattering and never returning.
