Kennedy (Author)THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING CLASSIC OF POLITICAL INTEGRITY

With a foreword by Robert F. Kennedy and introduction by Caroline Kennedy

John F. Kennedy's enduring classic resounds with timeless lessons on the most cherished of virtues--courage and patriotism--and remains a moving, powerful, and relevant testament to the indomitable American spirit

During 1954-55, Kennedy, then a junior senator from the state of Massachusetts, profiled eight American patriots, mainly United States Senators, who at crucial moments in our nation's history, revealed a special sort of greatness: men who disregarded dreadful consequences to their public and private lives to do that one thing which seemed right in itself. They were men of various political and regional allegiances--their one overriding loyalty was to the United States.

Courage such as these men shared, Kennedy makes clear, is central to all morality--a man does what he must in spite of personal consequences--and these exciting stories suggest that, without in the least disparaging the courage with which men die, we should not overlook the true greatness adorning those acts of courage with which men must live.

As Robert F. Kennedy writes in the foreword, Profiles in Courage "is not just stories of the past but a book of hope and confidence for the future. What happens to the country, to the world, depends on what we do with what others have left us."

This special "P.S." edition of the book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the book's publication. It includes vintage photographs and an extensive author biography, and features Kennedy's correspondence about the writing project, contemporary reviews of the book, a letter from Ernest Hemingway, and two rousing speeches from recipients of the Profile in Courage Award.

Author Biography
JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY (1917-1963), often referred to as JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He was the youngest person elected president.

After Kennedy's military service as commander of the Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109 during World War II in the South Pacific, his aspirations turned political, with the encouragement and grooming of his father, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Kennedy represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953 as a Democrat, and in the U.S. Senate from 1953 until 1960. Kennedy defeated then Vice President and Republican candidate Richard Nixon in the 1960 U.S. presidential election, one of the closest in American history. He is the only practicing Roman Catholic to be president, as well as the youngest elected to the office, at the age of 43. Kennedy is also the only president to have won a Pulitzer Prize. Events during his administration include the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Space Race, the African American Civil Rights Movement, and early events of the Vietnam War.

Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the crime and was murdered two days later by Jack Ruby before he could be put on trial. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald had acted alone in killing the president; however, the House Select Committee on Assassinations declared in 1979 that there was more likely a conspiracy that included Oswald. The entire subject remains controversial, with multiple theories about the assassination still being debated. The event proved to be an important moment in U.S. history because of its impact on the nation and the ensuing political repercussions. Today, Kennedy continues to rank highly in public opinion ratings of former U.S. presidents.

Number of Pages: 304

Dimensions: 0.75 x 8 x 5.45 IN

Publication Date: April 11, 2006

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Profiles in Courage

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 11.4

Point Value: 13

Report copyright infringement

by Roger Bruns (Author)

Cesar Chavez, the labor organizer and founder of the United Farm Workers of America, was, perhaps, an unlikely hero. In this biography, his early life is shown to be fairly typical for a boy in a close-knit family of Mexican Americans who worked the land in Arizona and California and endured hardship and discrimination. His story reveals the underside of the American Dream, and his later successes in helping farm workers and building a union to represent them are a testament to something extraordinary in a seemingly ordinary man.

As a young man, Chavez looked for a way out of the fields in the Navy but only found similar ethnic hatred. He married and started a family soon after his discharge and returned to the fields. Chavez hated the injustices meted out to his family and other migrant workers. They were on American labor's last rung, thousands of individuals making a pittance for their back-breaking work, living in desperate and inhumane conditions, poisoned by the pesticides, with few rights or leaders on whom to lean. The migrant workers found a champion in Chavez, who started to see the possibilities of making a difference for those in need. He began to work for a social service agency in California and met a priest who inspired him to read and learn about figures such as Mohandas Gandhi. From that point on, his labor activism is legendary. In the context of the times, with the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, and race riots raging, Chavez is shown to slowly build the farm workers labor movement, along with colleagues such as Dolores Huerta. Using the nonviolent examples of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., from the 1960s until his death in 1993, Chavez launched strikes, boycotts, marches, and his famous hunger strikes to force concessions from the big growers for better conditions and pay for the workers. His union lobbied Congress on behalf of the farm workers. Chavez and his supporters faced police and grower brutality, government surveillance, and death threats, and he was jailed several times. Like Gandhi, his example is for the ages.
Author Biography

ROGER BRUNS is a prolific writer and biographer with titles such as Preacher: Billy Sunday and Big-Time American Evangelism (1992), Billy Graham: A Biography (Greenwood, 2004), and Jesse Jackson: A Biography (Greenwood, 2005).

Number of Pages: 168

Dimensions: 0.66 x 9.54 x 6.3 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: September 01, 2005

Report copyright infringement

by Malala Yousafzai (Author), Christina Lamb (With)THE BESTSELLING, "REMARKABLE" (MARIE CLAIRE) MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Award: Isinglass Teen Read Award (2016)

As seen on Netflix with David Letterman

I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

"Like millions around the world, I draw strength from brave Malala's example.... These passages, which constitute 30 percent more material, reinforce the fact that Anne was first and foremost a teenage girl, not a remote and flawless symbol. She fretted about, and tried to cope with, her own emerging sexuality. Like many young girls, she often found herself in disagreement with her mother. And like any teenager, she veered between the carefree nature of a child and the full-fledged sorrow of an adult. Anne emerges more human, more vulnerable, and more vital than ever. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse for two years. She was thirteen when the family went into the Secret Annex, and in these pages she grows to be a young woman and a wise observer of human nature as well. With unusual insight she reveals the relations between eight people living under extraordinary conditions, facing hunger, the everpresent threat of discovery and death, complete estrangement from the outside world, and above all, the boredom, the petty misunderstandings, and the frustrations of living under such unbearable strain, in such confined quarters. A timeless story rediscovered by each new generation. The Diary of a Young Girl stands without peer. For both young readers and adults it continues to bring to life this young woman, who for a time survived the worst horror the modern world had seen - and who remained triumphantly and heartbreakingly human throughout her ordeal. Linda Cohen (Author)

Sarinka is an evocative family memoir detailing the rarely heard Sephardic Jewish experience during the Shoah. What began as a daughter's hunger to faithfully recount as a family heirloom her parents' unique story of great love and great loss at the hands of the Nazis is now a gift to us all. With fastidious attention to detail and to history, Linda Cohen immerses us in the twists, turns, terrors and daily miracles of her hastily wed parents' harrowing flight from their homes, their families, and eventually from their country. With painterly descriptions that engage all the senses, Cohen has us right there with Sarinka and Leon as the Nazis invade Yugoslavia mere hours before their planned wedding celebration, with the Muslim neighbors who came to their aid, with the partisans in the freezing woods, and with Ruth Gruber, the young American journalist who had a bold plan, capitalizing on Franklin Roosevelt's modest exception to tight US immigration quotas to help save a handful of Europe's doomed Jews. Sarinka is a significant addition to Holocaust literature. --Karen Tintori, author of Unto the Daughters: The Legacy of an Honor Killing in a Sicilian-American Family, St. Martins Press Sarinka is a moving Holocaust story that traces the life of a young woman beginning with her childhood in prewar Yugoslavia to experience living on the run, in hiding, and as a nurse among Tito's partisans. She was one of the 982 refugees who resided at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter that was established in America for victims of the Nazi Holocaust during WWII. Author and daughter of the heroine, Linda Cohen takes the readers on a unique journey as she describes life in Yugoslavia-through her mother's eyes-during the war and all the restrictions and dangers she encountered once Yugoslavia became occupied by the Axis powers. Heroic and tragic in parts, Sarinka embodies the resiliency of the human spirit. --Rebecca Fisher, Researcher at the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum Oswego, NY. Sarinka is beautifully written, historically accurate and a genuine page turner. Young people who read this book will understand the truth of being a refugee. They will learn what it means to lose everything-one's home, one's language, one's culture. And yet they will find hope in this very moving story. --Ruth Gruber, March 14, 2010 Sarinka, a true story about a young girl set in WWII is one of perseverance and survival. Her world was suddenly shattered when the running and hiding began the very day she dreamed of her whole life, her wedding day. Sarinka and her husband face danger and uncertainty as they desperately tried to save their lives. No matter how tough life gets, they never give up hope, even when they find themselves in an internment camp in America, one that many never knew existed in 1944. This journal of a teenage girl who along with her family was forced into hiding and had to go through a series of tragedies and total disruption of their everyday lives, brings to light the tortures that people had to go through owing to tyranny of the leaders. The book offers an innocent account of how the girl, Anne, who was transported from her regular life, of school, friends and infatuations, to life of morbid horror and constant fear. An abrupt silent towards the end of the book, screams about the unfortunate end to the plans, visions and future that one weaves with so much hope.

Number of Pages: 346

Dimensions: 0.94 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: January 21, 2023

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Diary of a Young Girl

Interest Level: Upper Middle Grades, 6 and up

Reading Level: 6.5

Point Value: 14

Report copyright infringement

by James Bowen (Author)

The Instant New York Times bestseller! A Street Cat Named Bob is now a major motion picture, the film's all-star cast includes Luke Treadway (Unbroken, Clash of the Titans), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), and Ruta Gedmintas (The Borgias).

James is a street musician struggling to make ends meet.
Bob is a stray cat looking for somewhere warm to sleep.

When James and Bob meet, they forge a never-to-be-forgotten friendship that has been charming readers from Thailand to Turkey.

A Street Cat Named Bob is an international sensation, landing on the bestseller list in England for 52 consecutive weeks and selling in 26 countries around the world.

When street musician James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. In the midst of her search, she meets an older teen who showers her with compliments and makes her feel wanted. The young girl chooses to follow this young man, and the unthinkable happens-she is raped The chapters wind along her life's path, which often reaches dark depths or spirals out of control with relationships, drugs, and the other choices that define her new life. The story shows a very raw side of the lingering effects of rape: the vulnerability, insecurity, loss of self-worth. After finally labeling what happened to her, she thinks perhaps her life will get better. However, she continues to lose touch with her faith and her family. Eventually, she meets a much older man and succumbs to his "grooming." Following a short courtship, she marries the man. Yet even before the honeymoon is over, she finds herself looking into the eyes of a different man, one who begins to verbally abuse her. She is an adult now, but feels she has no one to turn to. Instead of saving her, the marriage becomes a culmination of the struggles and depression that have been building in her since she was traumatized as a teen. Soon they have a child together, and it is that child who begins to change the young woman and help her to fight to get her life back. Combining a fierce need to overcome these trials, numerous hours of counseling, and the will to reclaim her faith, the woman is able to finally overcome the trauma of being a victim and claim herself as a survivor.

Number of Pages: 146

Dimensions: 0.31 x 8 x 5 IN

Publication Date: May 21, 2014

Report copyright infringement

by Andrew Ross (Author), Deborah Erna Oury (Author)

Endre Lovinger was only 17 years old when the Nazis invaded Budapest, Hungary, in March 1944. This huge event, so daunting as it can be, left a mark in the lives of the people who have experienced it and even those who have only heard of it. The Nazis, not only brought destruction, but they brought an unforgettable scar amongst the human race. At those times, the victims would have called for a savior, someone who could literally take them out from the hell they were living in.Holocaust Saviors: True Stories Of Rescuers That Save Holocaust Refugees is a book that talks about those heroes. They were ordinary people who also tasted the face of death but didn't crumble. Despite the sight of fear, these brave hearts not only survived, but they helped others survive as well. In This Book, You Will Learn About The Lives Of: -Nancy Wake - Called the "White Mouse", fought with the French resistance during World War II.-Maria Kotarba - A courier with the Polish resistance whose goal was to help the Jews after they had been exterminated.-Adelaide Hautval - The French female Physician eager to protect the Jewish people being subjected to Nazi experimentation and torture.-Varian Fry - The American journalist who started the Emergency Rescue Committee, that made a way for Jewish people trying to leave the Nazi territory. This book about the people that went out of their way to save a small part of humanity. This book will give you a clear and detailed view of who they are and what their accomplishments are in times where there seemed to be no hope. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fasciting commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short. The diary was retrieved by Miep Gies, who gave it to Anne's father, Otto Frank, the family's only known survivor, just after the war was over. From infancy she was fascinated by animal behavior, and in 1957 at 23 years old, she met the famous paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey while she was visiting a friend in Kenya. Impressed by her passion for animals, he offered her the chance to be the first person to study chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, in the wild. And so three years later Jane travelled from England to what is now Tanzania and, equipped with only a notebook, binoculars and determination to succeed, ventured into the then unknown world of wild chimpanzees.

Jane Goodall's research at Gombe national park has given us an in-depth understanding of chimpanzee behavior. The research continues, but in 1986, realizing the threat to chimpanzees throughout Africa, Jane travelled to six study sites. She learned first-hand not only about the problems facing chimpanzees, but also about those facing so many Africans living in poverty. She realized that only by helping local communities find ways of making a living without destroying the environment could chimpanzees be saved. Since then Jane has travelled the world raising awareness and learning about the threats we all face today, especially climate change and loss of biodiversity. Author of many books for adults and children and featured in countless documentaries and articles, Jane has reached millions around the world with her lectures, podcasts and writings. Since its publication in 1947, it has been a beloved and deeply admired monument to the indestructible nature of the human spirit, read by millions of people and translated into more than fifty-five languages. Doubleday, which published the first English translation of the diary in 1952, now offers a new translation that captures Anne's youthful spirit and restores the original material omitted by Anne's father, Otto -- approximately thirty percent of the diary. The elder Frank excised details about Anne's emerging sexuality, and about the often-stormy relations between Anne and her mother. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation forces, hid in the back of an Amsterdam office building for two years. This is Anne's record of that time. She was thirteen when the family went into the "Secret Annex," and in these pages, she grows to be a young woman and proves to be an insightful observer of human nature as well. A timeless story discovered by each new generation, "The Diary of a Young Girl" stands without peer. A timeless story discovered by each new generation, "The Diary of a Young Girl stands without peer. For young readers and adults, it continues to bring to life this young woman, who for a time survived the worst horrors the modern world had seen -- and who remained triumphantly and heartbreakingly human throughout her ordeal.

Back Jacket

Restored in this Definitive Edition are diary entries that had been omitted from the original edition. For those who know and love Anne Frank, The Definitive Edition is a chance to discover her anew. Now, in a new edition enriched by many passages originally withheld by her father, we meet an Anne more real, more human, and more vital than ever. Here she is first and foremost a teenage girl—stubbornly honest, touchingly vulnerable, in love with life. She imparts her deeply secret world of soul-searching and hungering for affection, rebellious clashes with her mother, romance and newly discovered sexuality, and wry, candid observations of her companions. Facing hunger, fear of discovery and death, and the petty frustrations of such confined quarters, Anne writes with adult wisdom and views beyond her years. Anne who received the Diary as a birthday present started writing on June 12 1942, about the turbulence she and her family had to go through, living in hiding. Anne has written the Diary from a teenager's perspective who manages to remain a cheerful girl who loved to talk and observe even under the oppressions of Nazis. However, a thirteen year old feeling the impact of intolerance and racism makes readers realise how profound the impacts of the world War II was. The entries in the Diary end abruptly after two years on 1 August, 1944, with the promise of a new day that never comes in the life of Anne Frank. The story of Anne Frank and the Frankfurt family is considered one of the most insightful accounts of the world War through the eyes of a young girl. The Diary of a young girl is one of the world's most widely known books and has been the basis for several plays and films.

Number of Pages: 264

Dimensions: 0.6 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: January 01, 2018

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Diary of a Young Girl

Interest Level: Upper Middle Grades, 6 and up

Reading Level: 6.5

Point Value: 14

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0300/5595/6612/files/ZWVhSWVrY1l2bWZiV1lZM3V1dHhKQT09_5753a73b-7606-4a78-b114-984f58dc26e9.webp?v=1759247792
the-diary-of-a-young-girl-paperback-7
The Diary of A Young Girl - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Anne Frank (Author)

I haven't written for a few days, because I wanted first of all to think about my diary. It's an odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because have never done so before, but because it seems to me that neither 1 - nor for that matter anyone else - will be interested in the unbosoming of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl. Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart.-Anne Frank Anne Frank's world famous diary charts two years of her life from 1942 to 1944, when her family were hiding in Amsterdam from German Nazis. The diary begins just before the family retreated into their 'Secret Annexe.' Anne Frank recorded mostly her hopes, frustrations, clashes with her parents, and observation of her companions. Its first version, which appeared in 1947, was edited by Anne's father, Otto Frank. Years later, he combined those notebooks with other survivors' memories to create a classic work of documentary witness in the form of a novel. When Babi Yar was first published in a Soviet magazine in 1966, it became a literary sensation, not least for its powerful and unprecedented narratives of the Nazi massacre of the city's Jews, and later Roma, prisoners of war, and other victims, at the Babi Yar ravine--one of the largest mass killings of the Holocaust. After Kuznetsov defected to Great Britain in 1969, he republished the book in a new edition that included extensive passages censored by the Soviets, along with his later reflections.

In its fully realized form, Babi Yar is a classic of Holocaust and World War II testimony. With sustained immediacy, it relates a scrappy but principled boy's day-to-day fight to survive and provide for his family. He dodges bullets and avoids transport to Germany, befriends black market horse dealers and pre-revolutionary aristocrats, wonders at the pomp of the Nazi's opera performances, overhears his mother and grandparents debate the merits of German versus Soviet rule, collects grenades, digs hiding places, and confronts the moral dilemmas of assisting neighbors or looting stores--all the while hearing the constant hum of bullets at the Babi Yar ravine nearby.

In a bravura feat of reporting, he tells the story of what happened at Babi Yar--from the deceptive roundup of the city's Jews and execution of the national soccer team, to the memories of the site's few survivors and the story of a daring escape. The book's once-censored passages explore the Soviet effort to hide the realities of the massacre and other facts about wartime that the regime did not want discussed.

In the manner of Elie Wiesel's Night or The Diary of Anne Frank, here is a book that tells some of the most uncomfortable truths of the past century--and the most essential.
Author Biography

Anatoly Kuznetsov was born in Kyiv in 1929. Up From Slavery is the 1901 autobiography of Booker T. Washington detailing his personal ethnic and national experiences in working to rise from the position of a slave during the Civil War in the historical United States, to the difficulties and obstacles he overcame to get an education at Hampton University, to his work establishing vocational schools, most notably the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, to help black people and other disadvantaged minorities learn useful, marketable skills and work to pull themselves, as a race, up by the bootstraps. Up From Slavery is a must read memoir. The Souls of Black Folk is a classic work of African American literature written by W.E.B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of the field of sociology and the study of social science. The Souls of Black Folk is a African American historical literary cornerstone and was originally published in 1903. The Souls of Black Folk contains essays on race, in which W.E.B. Du Bois drew from his own experiences as an African American in the United States of America. W.E.B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. W.E.B. Du Bois was also one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an 1845 ethnic & national memoir and treatise on abolition written by famous orator and former slave Frederick Douglass. While often categorized in the genre of biographies & memoirs, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is generally held to be the most famous of a number of African American & Black narratives written by former slaves during the same period. In factual detail, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass describes the historical events of his life and is considered to be one of the most influential of ethnic & national biographies & memoirs to fuel the abolitionist movement of the early 19th century in the Historical United States. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass encompasses eleven chapters that vividly recpature Frederick Douglass's life as a slave and his ambition to become a free man.

Number of Pages: 480

Dimensions: 0.97 x 8.5 x 5.51 IN

Publication Date: August 22, 2016

Report copyright infringement

by Steven Rabb (Author)

(The Student Edition offers the reader sixty new pages, including a new foreword from the author, over 600 notes and sources, an enhanced index, and a new bibliography.)

With more than 2,000 five-star reviews, readers are raving over this powerful speech to America crafted from the words of the Founding Fathers.
