Originally published in 1960 as a portion of the author's larger "Leonard Bernstein: A Biography for Young People," this paperback edition chronicles the maestro's early music instruction with piano teachers in Boston; his years at Harvard, where he studied under Walter Piston, among others; his time at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music as a conducting pupil of Fritz Reiner; and his summers at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, first as a student of, then an assistant conductor to, Serge Koussevitzky.
Author Biography
Austrian-born American writer David Ewen (1907-1985) was the author of dozens of books about classical and popular music, including biographies of Joseph Haydn, Arturo Toscanini, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin.
