Author Biography
Swami Adyananda Saraswati, formerly Bishnu Joshi, came to United States after completing his doctorate in veterinary medicine from India. He received an MS in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri and a PhD in clinical pathology from the University of California, Davis. He taught immunopathology and hematology as an assistant professor in a medical college in Tennessee for a few years and became a clinical immunologist at the VA hospital. After passing the state examinations he became the first foreign veterinary practitioner in the state of Tennessee. He specialized in hematology, skin diseases and small-animal medicine. Some time after establishing his clinical practice Swamiji was initiated into Tantra by his guru, Acharya Sakitpada, the eminent Dakshinpanthi Tantra Yogi and Vedantist. Acharya Saktipada also imparted Swamiji with practical knowledge of Vedanta. Swamiji practiced Tantra under his Guru's guidance for many years. After heeding his spiritual call to abandon his practice and become a renunciate, Swamiji took sannyasa and devoted himself completely to spiritual sadhana. Swamiji has been a renunciate since his initiation into sannyasa in 2002. Swamiji derives great inspiration from Swami Jyotirmayanda's teachings and writings and strives to present Vedanta in a simplified manner. The main goals of Swamiji's life are to make Vedanta accessible to all and help people transform their negativity into positive sentiments in order to attain self-realization. Swamiji gives lessons on the Bhagavata Gita, Upanishads and Vedanta and instructs his disciples in various aspects of yoga. His is a practical approach towards religion and spirituality. Acharya Abhayananda has been a disciple of Swami Adyananda Saraswati since 2006. He received disksha from Swamiji in 2007. He is a karma sannyasi and strives to integrate the teachings of Vedanta into his daily life as a householder and computer scientist. Acharya Abhayananda lives with his family in New Jersey.
